Aussie Rules in MelbourneRelated ArticlesGreg Norman YachtThe greg norman yacht – a golf enthusiast’s dream come true. If you’re interested in luxury yachts, you’ve probably seen pictures of the 87-foot Greg Norman yacht. This boat was designed by golf legend Greg Norman and is just as impressive as its owner. After all, he’s a yacht enthusiast, too! Here are some of Norman’s favourite details. These features include the helipad, wine cellar, 15-foot herb garden, and wine cellar. It’s not difficult to see why a professional golfer would want a superyacht. He formerly competed on the PGA Tour and was known as “the Great White Shark” on the course. Today, Greg Norman is one of the most popular athletes of all time, and his yacht is no exception. It’s one the most luxurious yachts on the planet, and you’d be hard-pressed not to want to be there! Besides golfing, Norman is an entrepreneur. He owns a large yacht and a Palm Beach Gardens mansion. He is a well-known golfer who has won over 88 tournaments as well as two Major Championships. But he isn’t all about his wealth, either. He owns a stunning mansion in Palm Beach Gardens and a magnificent yacht. The yacht is a dream come true for him. Among Norman’s many other impressive projects, the Aussie Rules is the largest aluminum motor yacht in history. The Aussie Rules was built by Oceanfast, a world-renowned Australian boat maker. It was ten years ahead of its time, and the first of its kind. It won the Showboats Yacht of the Year award and was even ten years ahead of its time. As a result, it is one of the most luxurious yachts in the world. Greg Norman bought his yacht in 2005. It measures 69.5m, or 228ft, and is called Aussie Rules. Norman Lockwood designed it to allow for remote fishing locations. It also features a giant winch that faces the transom door, large fish boxes, lighted aquarium wells and bait freezers. Another notable feature of this yacht is its tower, which is made by Marine Metal Fabrications. Norman’s father was a strong supporter of Norman and was happy to spend time with him. When Merv was 94, he took him to Australia to meet him. Merv was a very affectionate person and never spoke of his regrets publicly. The two of them embraced each other. Merv came forward to hug his son. Norman was left speechless, but his family was happy to have him back. - Where Was The Blind Side Filmed

Golf: New $129m toy for Greg NormanNothing is ever too grandiose for golfer Greg Norman, especially when it comes to yachts. He has taken taken delivery of an 85.5m craft that is said to have cost US$70 million ($129.5 million) and is believed to be the world's largest aluminium motor yacht. "There are many interesting and unique design features that will place the yacht [named Aussie Rules] at the top of her category when she is seen cruising around destinations throughout the world," Norman said. Unique might be an understatement. The yacht has seven auxiliary boats and a US$1 million home theatre. Optional extras include a gym, several jet skis and a tackle room with 200 fishing rods. In conversation with golfing legend and avid yachtsman Greg NormanKnown worldwide as an athlete and a businessman, Greg Norman has seen international success both on the golf course and in the boardroom. An icon of the sport, Australian-born Norman started golfing at the age of 15 and joined the PGA tour full-time in 1983. He went on to hold the second-longest reign as world number one and win over 90 PGA tournaments, earning him the name ‘Great White Shark’. Now a successful entrepreneur, Greg is chairman and CEO of the Greg Norman Company, which owns over a dozen businesses worldwide – encompassing golf course design, global real estate award-winning wine, lifestyle apparel, and a diverse investment division. He lives with his family in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where he continues to be involved in sporting, business and charitable endeavours. An avid yachtsman, Greg has owned multiple superyachts, including the 70m Oceanfast superyacht AUSSIE RULES, which he sold in 2004. Having sold AUSSIE RULES once as FLORIDIAN and then for a second time as NOMAD at the Monaco Yacht Show (agreeing the deal as yacht horns blared to signal the end of the event), our good friends over at Ocean Independence were keen to learn more about what drives Greg and discuss his love of yachting. Did you have a connection to the water from an early age? I grew up in Townsville, close to the beach, and my family had a holiday hut on Magnetic Island, only eight kilometres from the shore, so the Great Barrier Reef was in my blood! Every day as a young kid, I would come home from school and we would go out fishing, surfing, snorkelling, and diving. I would ride my horse bareback along the beach, skim-board, and fish in a little boat with an 18-horsepower motor on the back. My sister and I grew up sailing a little boat called Peter Pan with the Townsville Sailing Club. I was very fortunate – I had a wonderful childhood. And how about golf? At age 15 we moved to Brisbane because of my dad’s work. I lost all my mates, though I was still surfing a lot at Sunshine Beach and Byron Bay. My golf really came on around the age of 16 after caddying for my mum one day. She was a four handicap, so I figured if she could do it, so could I. After that everything else got tossed aside, including water sports, cricket, rugby, and Aussie Rules. How did you get involved in superyacht ownership? It came out of my love of the ocean. My dad built me a boat with wood framing when I was about 11 years old, and I thought the woodworking process was amazing. I had watched my dad working under our house and was fascinated by how much work was involved in shaping, and the tools involved. This whole experience really stayed with me. The first AUSSIE RULES was a 27m sports fishing boat, built by Oceanfast in Australia. My passion for deep-sea fishing and scuba diving were the motivators behind this build: I wanted a platform that would allow me to do both. I shipped it over to the US, and quite honestly it was one of the biggest sports fishing boats there at the time – I was ahead of the game. It was the platform I wanted with the four state rooms and plenty of dive rooms. Great for the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Then I bought a Feadship, which I enjoyed, but at the same time I knew there was something missing. I needed to have another sports fishing boat to go diving and fishing. I had the idea of building the 69m AUSSIE RULES at Oceanfast, with a combination of all the things I needed. I designed it to circumnavigate Australia, which I really wanted to do. It had a flat bottom, because tidal flows in the northern part of Australia are 45 feet. I got involved with the tank testing, the stringers, all those engineering things – I was fascinated with the build process and I really studied hard. I wrote the specification book before I even went to the yard. What did you like about the build process? All of it! I loved understanding the engine room and the working spaces, the generators, centrifuges and water-makers, all that stuff. There was the question of where we were going to put everything. There is a refrigerated trash compactor in the transom. The boat just grew and grew to be the 230. To build something of that magnitude and sophistication in the late 1990s, we had to be innovative in our mindset. We won the Showboats Yacht of the Year award. It is very important to remember that the yacht is a testament to Oceanfast, my captain (who was present throughout the build), and all the engineers, the sparks, and the skilled people who did a phenomenal job in Australia. This yacht was ten years ahead of her time. I really couldn’t get to enjoy her as much as I wanted as I was still playing golf. If I had the yacht now, you would never see me working. I regretted the day I sold her! Tell us about a favourite adventure on AUSSIE RULES I remember a month in French Polynesia with my family. We almost ran out of fuel as we got back to Bora Bora. We held like 285,000 litres and used the lot on the most amazing experience I’ve ever had: the most beautiful water, great experiences with oceanic white tips and bottlenose whales. Amazing! How have your businesses been during the Covid-19 pandemic? My businesses are global, so it’s not a one-size fits all answer. I think the world is in a confused place right now. From a geopolitical standpoint, there’s so much white noise and media bias. I have this saying: ‘The voice of the critic is far louder than the voice of the advocate’. Nowadays, one person challenging and complaining about a company can change everything. You have to be extremely sensitive to those situations and demands from customers. Through my travels, I love seeing what happens in different countries. Take Vietnam, a communist country loving free market capitalism! It is a red-hot country – great people, great food, great cities and very safe. The Vietnamese recognise that market capitalism is as good as gold. I was asked to be the Golf Tourism Ambassador in Vietnam, and I accepted wholeheartedly. All of that being said, I love where we are at and I think we’ve done a very good job of managing the whole process with my consumer products during the pandemic. We are in a strong position. Now we are looking into expanding further into the health and wellness space and looking at new opportunities – you have to be a forward thinker. I never look to the past, always to the future. Greg Norman's 87ft Oceanfast Aussie Rules for saleAussie rules, the 87ft oceanfast sportfish designed for expedition fishing, now for sale on our sites. We have to go back 20 years to when our Marine Editor was a callow youth to recount the launch of this stunning 87ft luxury Oceanfast Sportfish built in Western Australia for Greg Norman. It was circa 1996 and David Lockwood was bestowed the honour of being the first and only Australian journalist to drive this impressive boat, designed with Greg "The Shark" Norman's considerable input. The 87 footer was intended to spearhead a range of long-range Norman Sports Classic line game boats from 80-120 feet built by Oceanfast. "I drove Aussie Rules fast down Sydney Harbour at daybreak, the MTUs roaring, the sound system blaring — some of the crew hadn't slept that night and the party was still going — as the towering boat in blue livery with red boot stripe cut an impressive figure before the weary Sydney ferries just booting up," he says. "It might be two decades ago, but this was a highlight of a boating hack's career. I can close my eyes now and still feel the power... and the energy of the crew including "Flash" partying hard at 5.30am." Those twin 1500hp MTU engines, and a 18,000-plus litre fuel supply, were central to this boat's design intent — expedition fishing, with luxurious living accommodations for extended periods on the ocean. The boat has a 28-knot top speed (Lockwood says he reached that on the throttles), cruised at 23 knots and had an 800-1000nm range. Coming out of production US sportfishers, Norman wanted the ability to fish distant locations and Aussie Rules has apparently seen some of the world's hottest fishing spots over the years. The custom fishing equipment includes a giant winch facing the transom door, huge fish box, lighted aquarium wells, Rupp triple spreader 41' outrigger, bait freezers, Murray Brothers helm chair, aft station, transom fish door with dive access and swim out, Marine Metal Fabrications tower and more. The watersports and dive gear includes scuba gear storage, cockpit entrance, dive tank storage, bar fridge with ice maker, BBQ grill, rod stowage compartment under lounge, external head and shower and so on. As things eventuated, this boat was the only model in the adventurous Norman Sports Classic line produced by Oceanfast Marine Group, one of Australia's largest shipbuilders at the time. The promising venture intended to build luxury sportfishers from 80 to 120 feet in length, but Oceanfast ran into financial trouble. Norman believed there was a market for bigger sportfishers — time has proven him right — and he believed that he knew what people wanted in them. Back in the mid-90s, Oceanfast CEO John Farrell told the Florida-based newspaper The Sun-Sentinel that Norman (who preferred to fish stand-up tackle) had firm ideas of what he wanted in his boat. "All of the boats will be built with Greg Norman's name on them and with Greg Norman's input. Norman's influence will be most evident in the boat's size, lines and cockpit area. "Greg is fanatical about the cockpit layout, the height of the combing, the location of the baitwell," Farrell said back then. "He also has a particular idea on style." Aussie Rules was the showboat for the range that never eventuated. As such, it has a long list of features and equipment that you won't find on a production vessel. The loaded boat was selling for US$4.9m at the time, but has returned to the market with a US$1.89m asking price two decades later. Now newly refitted, the interior sleeps 10, plus crew, while the decor — originally Australian silky oak — and updated AV electronics throughout the vessel are said to result in a fresh atmosphere. At the time Lockwood drove it, Norman's captain Gary Stuve, who skippered The Shark’s boats for six years, said: "You're not going to catch a world-record blue [marlin) on 12-pound line, but it handles good enough that you can catch fish in it." Most people know two things about Tiger Woods' yacht: It's big, and it is named Privacy . As you would expect from someone who names his boat Privacy , Woods has never revealed much information about his yacht. But we can put together a profile of the yacht based on other sources of public information about it. How Big Is Woods' Yacht? There are some basics about the Woods' yacht that are known to be true. For example, it's 155 feet long. That's a big boat for an individual owner, but it's nowhere near the size of the biggest yachts on the seas (which top 500 feet in length), and it's not even the biggest yacht owned by a golfer: Greg Norman has a yacht that is nearly 230 feet in length. But hey, give him a break: Woods purchased the boat in 2004. He can always get a new one if a 155-foot, 2004-vintage yacht starts to feel a little cramped in size. How Much Woods' Boat Cost to BuyWoods bought his yacht from Christensen Shipyards in Vancouver, Wash., for a reported $20 million. According to Power and Motor Yacht magazine, Tiger's yacht is a "155 Trideck Motor Yacht known as Hull 026." (Ironically, the shipbuilders of Woods' Privacy allegedly violated the golfer's privacy, according to a subsequent lawsuit that Woods filed against Christensen. Woods claimed in his suit that the shipbuilders, contrary to agreement, used Woods' name and photos to promote their business. MSNBC.com reported in 2006 that the suit was settled in Woods' favor for $1.6 million.) Woods took delivery of his yacht in time for his wedding to Elin Nordegren in 2004; the couple spent their wedding night aboard the Privacy . The Palm Beach Post has reported that it was Nordegren, prior to the wedding, who made most of the interior decorating choices for the boat. Tiger's yacht is docked at a marina in North Palm Beach, Fla. (It is believed that Tiger Woods' house in Jupiter Island, Fla., has enough room on its Intracoastal Waterway frontage to berth Woods' yacht, although, as far as we know, Woods has never docked it there.) Amenities, Crew and More Details About Woods' YachtPower and Motor Yacht magazine has reported that the Privacy has a 12,000-gallon fuel tank that will take the boat 4,000 miles, with a top speed of 17 knots. The yacht is reported to have 6,500 square feet of living and work space and a capacity to sleep up to 21 people in a master suite and five guest rooms. It includes, according to various sources, a gym and theater, and carries multiple watercraft such as jet skis. It takes a crew of nine to operate. People magazine has reported of Woods' yacht that it "offers all the comforts of home and then some: a 2,000-gallon water tank, five guestrooms, a Jacuzzi, a gym, an elevator, a sky-lounge bar, a walk-in refrigerator, a deck dining area that seats 12, and two built-in wall safes." That's a nice boat! Tiger's Other Boat: The SolitudeWoods also owns another boat, a 61-footer named Solitude . The Solitude is a dive boat: a boat scuba diving enthusiasts use to to get out to their diving destinations. It's not a yacht, in other words, but it's a good guess that as dive boats go the Solitude is a mighty fine one. It was custom built, according to People Magazine , for a cost of from $2 million to $3 million, by a company named Garlington Landeweer Marine. According to the magazine, the Solitude is docked at Pirate’s Cove Resort & Marina, about 10 minutes from Woods' estate in Jupiter Island, Fla. - Tiger Woods' House and Backyard Practice Facility

New on YahooSuperyacht sinks: Cause of death revealed for NYC lawyer and wifeA New York City lawyer and his wife, who were among the seven who died in the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht last month off the coast of Sicily, passed away as a result of drowning, autopsies have revealed. The causes of death for Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda were confirmed by coroners in Italy, as autopsies are planned Wednesday on the bodies of Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy, according to The Associated Press. The Bayesian had 22 people on board – 12 passengers and 10 crew – when it capsized and sank within minutes of being hit by a predawn storm on Aug. 19. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, near the port of Porticello, where the yacht was anchored. Autopsies are pending for British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch – who had organized the yacht trip to celebrate a recent legal victory – as well as his 18-year-old daughter Hannah and the yacht’s cook, Recaldo Thomas. LUXURY YACHT CAPTAIN FACES MANSLAUGHTER INVESTIGATION AFTER DEATHS OF BRITISH TECH MOGUL, 6 OTHERS Morvillo was one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers in a fraud case involving the 2011 sale of search engine company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in an $11 billion deal that turned sour over allegations that Lynch had cooked the books to overvalue Autonomy, the AP reported. He was acquitted in June. Fifteen people, including Lynch's wife, were rescued from the 184-foot British-flagged luxury yacht. The CEO of a manufacturing company responsible for building the yacht has blamed a series of "indescribable, unreasonable errors" by the crew for the vessel’s demise. Giovanni Costantino told Reuters that the yacht’s crew made an "incredible mistake" of not being ready for the storm, which was included in shipping forecasts. The passengers should have been called out of their cabins and ordered to assemble at a safety point as the ship was preparing for the storm by taking measures such as pulling up the anchor, the CEO said. Fox News’ Michael Dorgan, Greg Wehner and The Associated Press contributed to this report. Step Inside Greg Norman’s Former Estate on Jupiter IslandThe golf legend and his wife, interior designer kiki norman, give the ultimate tour of the stunning florida property that she designed to be their forever home. Kiki and Greg Norman with Apollo in Jupiter Island, Florida. Photo : MAX KIM-BEE Setting out to make a forever home is generally filled with all kinds of twists and turns. But for golf superstar Greg Norman and his interior designer wife, Kirsten known as “Kiki,” plans went as smoothly as one could imagine for a two-year renovation, during which they lived in their guest house. To meet their specific needs, they tore down their existing South Florida estate on Jupiter Island and built from the ground up, with Kiki taking into consideration everything from the big picture to the tiniest detail. A nod to island living, the home’s design is in synch with the way the Normans like to live. “He loves being by the water, being on the beach, fishing, surfing, scuba diving, all those things,” says Kiki of her husband, who was ranked the top golfer in the world for 331 weeks. “He loves just walking around the house barefoot.” For Kiki, it’s clear that the mission is to achieve a comfortable version of aesthetic perfection. The Normans worked with architect Kevin Asbacher and landscape architect Fernando Wong on their Jupiter Island, Florida, home. Photo : Max Kim-Bee To achieve their vision, the Normans worked with Kevin Asbacher of Asbacher Architecture in Palm Beach. “The directive was a New England, sort of Nantucket style on the outside, but Tropical Modern on the inside,” Kiki explains. “We really wanted it to feel like a coastal beach home, but with a more European flair.” While the designs of Liaigre were an inspiration, an even bigger influence may be her husband himself. “When I design personal spaces, I always have Greg in mind,” says Kiki. “Greg is very masculine, but he’s very also barefoot and elegant at the same time.” To reflect that, Kiki curated a color palette that lives up to that masculinity while making strong statements with photography, art, and comfortable-yet-sculptural furniture. To bring life to the hushed-yet-bold palette, Kiki focused on bringing in lots of texture with “rich, earthy finishes and a lot of cabinetry.” Doors open the lounge area to the dining room, where an artwork by Piers Bateman commands attention along with an Apparatus chandelier. The table is by Western Heritage, and the chairs are Liaigre. Photo : Max Kim-Bee Kiki brings to these design decisions decades as an interior designer specializing in hospitality—having designed major hotels around the world in cities including Cairo and Zurich—as well as her global point of view having lived in eight different countries. That experience in hotel design has informed every aspect of how she shapes a home. “I always approach every design project from the point of view of a guest walking in the front door. What do they see first? Where are they getting their cocktail? Where are they putting their cocktail? And where are they sitting?,” she explains. That thoughtfulness in her design comes across in every inch of the 32,000-square-foot estate. And for all the home’s sophistication and polish, there’s still a welcoming and comfortable air, the feeling of a place where the entire family and grandkids can have fun. “I take great joy in creating spaces where people can congregate with enough seating for everybody,” she says. “There’s lots of little pockets around the house where you can sit and have different moments and experiences.” Stone floors by Cosentino and custom millwork by Coastal Millworks set the stage in the entry hall. The chandelier is from Coup D'Etat. Photo : Max Kim-Bee Staying true to her experience in hospitality design, the first thing that greets guests when they walk through the door is a well-appointed bar. “When we’re entertaining, I want guests to pick up a cocktail as soon as they walk in the door.” Kiki says this flow mimics that of a hotel where guests walk through a lobby lounge on the way to the main bar, which in this case lies outside just beyond doors that slide open for an indoor-outdoor feeling. Of course, any home of a golf legend, especially one who has won 91 professional tournaments, needs a special place to display a multitude of trophies. “We designed the library for hosting dinners that revolve around golf,” shares Kiki, who works in as head of the Norman Design Group , which includes properties in Mexico, Colombia, Florida, and Colorado. The room with its extensive shelving acts as a museum for Greg’s numerous trophies and memorabilia, but the space easily transforms into a dining room, especially used to host guests who have won dinners with Greg at charity auctions. “That room was designed to dazzle any golf fan who comes for dinner.” In addition, there’s a formal dining room, which seats 14, around an expandable yacht-style table with an Apparatus chandelier above. Another important room is Greg’s office, which features a photograph taken by François Nars in Tahiti, a place for which the Normans have a shared obsession. “I thought that that photograph pretty much summed up Greg and his office,” she says. Apollo finds his place at the foot of the Ralph Lauren bed, which frames the view of a photograph by Michael Dweck. Photo : Max Kim-Bee “Greg’s the easiest client on Earth, because he trusts me 100 percent” Kristen "Kiki" Norman But the house’s design isn’t just a reflection of their personalities, it’s also filled with interesting ideas for anyone no matter their golf handicap. For the kitchen, Kiki worked with Siematic for sleek cabinetry in olive green. To warm up the area, she added three Ralph Lauren pendants about the island, which is accompanied by Liaigre barstools. The kitchen also has a pair of yacht-style tables perfect for breakfast that can be joined into one long table for big family meals. Another interesting idea: In the primary bedroom, Kiki pulled the Ralph Lauren bed away from the wall, so that it floats in the room and maximizes the views of the Intercoastal Canal. The dining area in the kitchen makes for the ideal place for family meals with custom banquettes and yacht tables by Newport Yacht Collaborative paired with Liaigre chairs. The pendants and sconces are by Ralph Lauren. Photo : Max Kim-Bee Despite everything that went into what they thought was going to be a forever home, the couple and her two daughters only lived there for six months before they sold it. During COVID-19, they made the decision to downsize and move to Greg’s native Australia. However, plans unexpectedly changed, and they instead relocated to Florida’s nearby Palm Beach Gardens around the time Greg took on the role of CEO and commissioner of the LIV Golf League. “It was a really beautiful house. There’s some regret that we sold it, but I’m essentially happy to move on to the next project too,” reflects Kiki. And with her husband as her client, the result is bound to be just as dazzling. “Greg’s the easiest client on Earth, because he trusts me 100 percent.” More from GalerieGo Inside the 2024 Kips Bay Decorator Show House New YorkWhy Liaigre’s Head of Yacht Design Loves His Boat More Than EverStudio Liaigre Crafts a Refined Manhattan Apartment to Complement a Stunning Art CollectionExplore an Artfully Appointed Benetti Yacht by Bonetti/Kozerski ArchitectureLive artfully with curated stories straight to your inbox.
